Up In the Air

4 out of 5

Up in the Air is about a man whose job it is to travel across the country and fire ppl. He is not comfortable being close to others, he doesn't have any long term relationships, and he is barely in contact with his family. He learns though that his company plans on taking him out of the air and making him work in an office in one place. George Clooney plays the main character brlliantly, hes a man on the brink of a new outlook on life, hes a man denying who he really is in a lot of ways, or blissfully unware that anything is wrong, hes the man you hate are frustrated by, but you can't help but love, and he is Goerge Clooney, I don't think anyone else could have done it better. The supporting cast are all wonderful, but Anna Kendrick stopped me in my tracks here, I don't know where that girl came from, but I am look forward to seeing more of her, shes a show stopper.
The direction here is smooth and flowing in a way you feel like your up in the air.
The only reason I wouldn't give this a 5 star rating is because, I actually expected more. I did, I will admit it, despite all its good points, I thought it should have been better. On top of that, its lengthy, and seemed it could have been short a few scenes , poor editing I don't know, but something moments didn't seem to fit, and only added to the length of the movie not the storyline.

Overall a definite must see.

Its Complicated

3 and a half outta 5.

This film was enduring from beginning to end. The way divorce and the aftermath of divorce even 10 yrs later was handled and examined seemed honest and real, not glossed over as hollywood normally does. The relationships are believable, the performances are brilliant, my personal fave is Steve Martin, who is just undeniably charming here, your really rooting for him as well as the soon to be son in law who gets caught up in the complications played by the always hilarious John Krasinski . The movie isn't perfect, it does drag on in parts, and has its editing issues imo, but if your looking for a good laugh , with a little heart, I highly recommend it.

Avatar

3 out of 5

OK, here it is Hep's review of Avatar. sigh. Avatar is stunning visually, of course it is, and we all know that, James Cameron won't let us forget it, right? Beyond that though.... the storyline has been done before and better I might add (think Dances with wolves). The acting is subpar at best, most of the time so I don't know about this one. I can't say it was a bad movie, its wasn't, its stunning, but its dragged on in parts, it was BEYOND pradictable, and after awhile your just not that amazing with the effects and want a better film. Still though I can't give it any less than a 3 outta 5, its technologically groundbreaking and that deserves some merit IMO. Just don't go into it believing this is the best film you will ever see, its not, its just not.

The Hurt Locker.

4 and a half stars out of 5.

The Hurt Locker is the most riviting war film I have seen since The Thin Red Line and Black hawk Down. The spot on intense direction definatly remined me of BHD.
It tells a side of the "war hero" you don't often see, the adraineline rush junkie, who needs to be out in the battle field to feel alive. The direction here is flawless, the performances are powerful and believable at every turn. I don't normally enjoy films about war, they seemed to be filled with gratutious violence, (which hey its war, right, what do I think its like, lol), and of course this film isn't withouht its bloody parts, but they aren't the heart of the picture the heart of the picture shines through them, and that left me speechless TBH.
Please see this movie, its a total gem.

The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1054606/

I am giving this 3 out of 5 stars.
This was an interesting ride and I would expect no less from Terry Gilliam.
Its a fantastical tale of an ancient man making a deal with the devil and all that unfolds as the devil comes to collect. It co stars Heath Ledger in one of his final performances, and due to Heath's untimely death Johny Depp, Jude Law and Colin farrel also make appearances. The film is far from perfect, the direction seems rushed and jumpy in places but over all , I engaged in the storyline, and the world being created, so I say its worth a watch for those looking for something a little off beat.

Whip It

This movie is Drew Barrymore's baby, her directorial debut, and she doesn't miss a beat here. On the surface Whip It is the story of 17 yr old Bliss, whose mother (played beautifully by one of my fave's Marcia Gay Harden) forces her from beauty pageant to beauty pageant , While Bliss runs in the opposite direction to an all girl roller derby team. The heart of it, is that mother daughter struggle to really see and understand eachother, it touched the mother in me, in a way I didn't expect.
Whip It Doesn't take its self too seriously though, there are as I said touching moments, but its also filled with colorful characters, goofy names, and laughable characteristics, Drew's Smashly Simpson is a stand out for sure, shes a mishap or foul waiting to happen and never ceases to entertain.
Highly recommend Whip It, for those looking for a purely fun entertaining film , big thumb up!

Oh and the soundtrack kinda rocks, FWIW.
